Circulating communication on a circular economy

‘Circular economy’ has become a buzz term, but for good reason. People are realising that a system based on improving energy efficiency and reducing waste is more important than ever. Becoming ‘circular’ is, essentially, about recycling our resources and mitigating climate change, and what we can do now to improve our future.

In order to sustain our planet and the long-term survival of the human race, we can:

- acknowledge these global shifts

- rethink the environmental impact of products or services at the design stage
- integrate circular economy models into business strategy.

A boost for business
Businesses are becoming more sustainable by the minute. The BSR and GlobeScan State of Sustainable Business Survey 2018 shows that companies are increasingly using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a blueprint when setting targets.

Whether it’s Schiphol implementing electric buses, or Google signing 2.5 gigawatts worth of solar and wind energy contracts, organisations are recognising the necessity of driving sustainability.

If each industry reduced their carbon footprint by investing in renewable energy or providing a wider availability of sustainable products, this would have a hugely positive impact both on their consumers, and their companies. It’s a win-win situation.

A call for communication
In the same survey, corporate reputation was the number one driver of sustainability efforts. Not only does a business need to build their international brand, they need to build trust with their consumers and stakeholders, by communicating their innovative contribution to a sustainable future.

With the help of engaging communication, collaboration can be achieved across the value chain. Investors, customers and employees are key drivers of sustainability. Only 9% of the world economy is ‘circular’, according to the Global Circularity Report last year, but the Dutch government wants their economy to be completely circular by 2050.
